Roper Hospital Showcases Operating Room Advances

TRUMPF ModuBuild OR honored nationally

Infection Control Among Benefits

ModuBuild is becoming recognized as the leader in prefabricated construction kits for hospital interior build out

When Roper Hospital, part of South Carolina’s 657 bed Roper Healthcare System, unveiled the first-phase of its $10 million Operating Room facilities project in the Fall of 2010, one technology drew quite a bit of interest.

The ModuBuild modular medical construction system from TRUMPF uses prefabricated, integrated components including stainless steel wall panels and doors, to provide efficient construction, hygienic and infection control advantages and easy room modifications. Among those who took note of this, the first ModuBuild OR in the nation, was the American Council of Engineering Companies. The prestigious organization subsequently named the project a 2011 Engineering Excellence Award winner.

Known as the Academy Awards of engineering, the annual, national honor is based on uniqueness, originality, technical complexity, social and economic value and public awareness. “We are sincerely pleased that ModuBuild is being recognized as a leading-edge solution,” said TRUMPF Sales Engineer, Luke Welker. “But more so, we are gratified with the benefits it provides the staff and patients every day.”

Efficient, adaptable, hygienic

ModuBuild solutions, including color, door and scrub sink options can be seen at the TRUMPF Design & Innovation Center.

Roper’s Director of Perioperative Services, Lisa Horvath, RN, explains some ModuBuild features do benefit Roper every day, while others offer long-term advantages. “In terms of infection control, the modular OR is a significant asset,” says Horvath. The stainless steel panels are nonporous and easy to clean, she explains. In addition, aspects of the system’s design minimize areas such as horizontal edges and corners where germs can breed.

The longer term benefits include simplified room modifications. “We selected this system because it represents a major leap in efficiency over drywall construction,” she said. The panels allow easy access behind walls to change equipment and wiring, and can be reconfigured or swapped quickly. As a result, equipment updates that can shut down a traditional OR for weeks, can be completed in just a few hours with the ModuBuild Kit.

Specialized ModuBuild construction techniques improve speed to completion.

“We call this future-proofing the OR,” says Horvath. The TRUMPF ModuBuild medical construction system offers efficient, flexible, high quality, durable construction components, with significant infection control benefits. Let us show you all these benefits and more. With increased speed to completion, ModuBuild is fast becoming recognized as the leader in prefabricated construction kits for hospital interior build out.
